Chain stitch selvedge: on every row K 1st st. tbl; slip last st. purlwise, yarn at front of work.
Gauge: 9 sts. and 14 rows crossways ribs, each to 10 cm [4”].
METHOD
Edge band: work edge crossways, start at center front. Cast on 15 sts. and work in rib patt; start with 1 chain selvedge and K1, and end in reverse. When work measures 60(64) cm cut thread, bring yarn through all sts. and pull up firmly. Work foundation row alike. Join foundation and bound-off edges.
Head: work crossways.
Cast on 30(32) sts. and work crossways ribs. When work measures 48 cm, on a 4th rev st-st row, bind off all sts.
Finishing: gather left edge of head with 9 sl-st, working 1 sl-st into each rev st-st rib only. Bring the double sewing thread through the right edge and gather to 24 cm in length. Gather again another 8 cm apart, leaving two crossways ribs free at upper and lower edges. Now bring edge band over head only so that the gathered edge is entirely under the center back of edge band. Sew lower gathered edge of head in position with the double sewing thread loosely, allowing the edge st. of edge band to overlap. Fasten the other gathers with the sewing thread alike. Sew rem edge band with the double sewing thread to head, leaving one P and one K rib free below edge band on either side. Leave one hole free at center front above edge band. Fasten the brooch in this position, covering seam and hole
