Stole
Size: about 200 x 35 cm.
Materials: yarn Gedifra Angora Merino by Coats 150 g #03317 mint and 100 g #03325 ecru. 4 mm [size 6] and 5 mm [size 8] circular needles brand Milward, and one 4 mm [size G/6] crochet hook, or size to obtain gauge.
Cable-smock pattern: no. of sts. mult of 28 + 8 sts. + 2 edge sts. see chart. Only RS rows are given; on WS rows work sts. as they appear. Rep motif in height as given. When changing cols, work mint with the single yarn on 4 mm needle, and mint-ecru rows with the double yarn on 5 mm needle.
Gauge: in cable-smock patt 28 sts. (= motif) = 13 cm wide, 33 rows (after smocking) = 10 cm high.
METHOD
Work stole crossways. Work on a circular needle owing to the large number of sts. Cast on 430 sts. mint on 4 mm needles and P 1 WS row, then cont in cable-smock patt as foll: work edge st., then motif of 28 sts. 15 times, end with sts. 1-8 of motif, edge st. In height work rows 3-72, then rows 37-48, rows 13-36 and rows 1-10. After these 116 rows in cable-smock patt, bind off all sts.
Finishing: block piece to measurements, cover with a damp cloth and allow to dry.
Crochet nubs for smocking as foll, yarn at front of work: insert crochet hook between 2 sts. as given in chart on RS of work and bring back out 20 rows below, bring yarn through and work 1 ch. Do not pull yarn up. Now work alt 1 yarn-over and 1 loop about 2 cm long below the yarn that pulls the rows tog until there are 11 loops on the hook. Work all loops off tog, then work 1 more ch. Cut thread. Bring initial and final threads through to WS of work, pull both threads up firmly and knot well.
