Hat, Scarf and Mittens

Sizes:
Hat: to fit about 48-52 cm head.
Scarf: about 125 cm long and 8 cm wide.
Mittens: size 3, for about 14 cm around hand. All measurements are in centimeters (cm). For approximate inch sizes simply multiply by 0.4 (or divide by 2.54).

Materials: yarn Schachenmayr nomotta, quality Bravo, 200 g # 8221 cherry (scarf about 120 g, hat and mittens about 30 g each), 50 g # 8206 rose (hat about 30 g, scarf about 5 g, mittens about 15 g), 50 g # 8192 mandarin (hat about 30 g, scarf about 5 g, mittens about 15 g). 3-4 mm [size 3-6] double-pointed needles (brand Milward), and for the hat additionally one 3-4 mm [size 3-6] circular needle Milward each about 40 cm long and 60 cm long, or size to obtain gauge.

Rib pattern: alt K2, P2.

Stockinet stitch (st-st): K RS rows; P WS rows; in rounds K all sts.

Stripes: work 2 rounds each cherry, rose, cherry, mandarin, cherry, rose, mandarin, rose = 16 rounds, rep these 16 rounds throughout.

Gauge: 24 sts. and 32 rows/rounds st-st, each to 10 cm [4"].

METHOD

Hat: cast on 112 sts. cherry evenly across the double-pointed needles and work 4 cm rib patt. Cont in st-st with stripes on the longer circular needle, working make 1 knitwise tbl every 2nd st. 56 times on 1st round = 168 sts.

After 24 rounds from welt (= 7.5 cm) every 28th st. and K each marked st. tog with resp preceding st. = 162 sts. Rep these dec on every foll round 26 times, changing to shorter circular needle and then double-pointed needles as necessary. Work another 2 cm st-st for tip over rem 6 sts., then pull sts. tog with the double yarn, darn away thread.

Scarf: for about 8 cm in width cast on 36 sts. cherry and work in rib patt, and K edge sts. on RS rows; P edge sts. on WS rows, and starting after edge st. with K1. When work measures 125 cm bind off all sts. Pull the ends of scarf tog.

Make 2 pompoms about 6 cm across each with cherry, rose and mandarin and sew to ends of scarf.

Mittens: Right mitten: cast on 36 sts. cherry evenly across the double-pointed needles (= 9 sts. on each needle) and work 11 cm rib patt. Work the palm with thumb gusset in st-st with stripes = 11 sts. for gusset after 14th round. Work another 2 rounds in patt, then slip the 11 sts. for gusset onto a holder. Cast on 5 sts. anew over the gusset sts. for fourchette and work 40 sts. over hand, dec sts. for hand, dec sts. for fourchette = 36 sts. When hand measures 9.5 cm work finger shaping.

Thumb: pick up the sts. for gusset plus 1 before fourchette, 5 sts. along gusset and 1 st. after gusset and arrange evenly 3 double-pointed needles. Work thumb in st-st cherry, and on 1st round K the 2 sts. before the fourchette tog tbl, and also the 2 sts. after fourchette tog = 16 thumb sts. When thumb measures about 4.5 cm work tip. Work left mitten in reverse.
